Asta Greenwood (she/her) is a Canadian-born writer and musician based in Scotland. She tried to move to Ireland in 2013 but missed. She took the hint from fate, and has been living in Edinburgh ever since. The city’s old stone, hidden corners, pockets of wilderness, and bewitching local history inspire much of her writing.
Her writing interests include fantasy (both adult and YA), creative non-fiction, silly poetry, serious songwriting, and humorous yet insightful blogging. She likes to write on themes of hope, inclusivity, community, and the value of small kindnesses. She is a queer author who supports trans rights, and strives for accurate LGBTQ+ representation in her work.
Genre-wise, if you like Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Catherynne M Valente, Erin Bow, JRR Tolkien, Roald Dahl, Diana Wynne Jones, RA Consell, The Bloggess, or Hyperbole and a Half, you will probably find something she's written to your liking.
Asta's other hobbies and interests include tapdancing, quilting, crafting, learning as many musical instruments as humanly possible, Greek mythology, Celtic folktales, human osteology and zooarchaeology, making extremely intricate to-do lists, cycling very slowly past particularly nice trees, learning languages she'll never need, and deciding to cook but then not cooking and having another biscuit instead. She is a trained chocolatier, and previously owned Rook & Raven Chocolate in Edinburgh, where she invented book-themed chocolate bars in slightly mad flavours.
She is currently in her second year of a Creative Writing degree at the University of the Highlands and Islands. This will be added to her collection of undergraduate degrees that so far includes officially completed BAs in Anthropology, Archaeology and Classical Studies, an unofficially completed BA in Music, and an officially uncompleted BA in Fine Arts. She really likes learning things. And it turns out the more you learn, the more you find out there still is to learn! How do you ever stop learning and settle down? If you figure that out, don't tell her. She doesn't want to know.
Asta is an activist and takes many things in life too seriously, but also believes in the power of humour, the joy of being alive, and that light hearts make better warriors. She hopes this little corner of the internet contributes to the bright side of life. She writes for you (yes, you), so if there's anything you'd particularly like her to write about, feel free to drop her a linehere and let her know.
